Royal Marine Cadet Training
Training within the Bromley Royal Marine Cadet Detachment follows a well structured, SCC approved, syllabus which takes the new entry from recruit through to Marine Cadet 1st Class. After MC1, the cadet can be promoted to Corporal and then Sergeant.
Cadet training is divided into Phases with phase 1 being Recruit to Marine Cadet 2nd Class (MC2). This covers the basic training of drill, turnout, unit ceremonial, basic Royal Marine history and some basic seamanship. After typically 6 weeks, you would take an advancement test to move from Recruit to Marine Cadet and after approx another 6 weeks, you would take your MC2 advancement test.
After being made an MC2, your indepth training starts. You will get to grips with basic fieldcraft and learn how to look after yourself in the field (ie outdoors). You will learn to cook for yourself and not only be self reliant but also a member of a small team. You will learn some basic map reading, learn to shoot not only the .22 rifle but also the cadet version of the SA 80 (the L98 A2). This phase of your training nornmally takes a year after which you can sit a Ciompany advancement board to become a MC1. Some MC1 cadets are appointed Lance Corporal.
Being a MC1 or L/Cpl, you refine your skills and learn other skills to a greater level. You also learn basic leadership. Typically after a year, you can sit a Corporals board and become one of the senior cadets of the detachment. Improving your leadership is a prime objective at this stage. Only a few full Corporals go on to become a Cadet Sergeant - a senior position in any Royal Marine Cadet Company.
